Hot flashes and their close relative night sweats are no fun at all. Here at Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN we want you to be as prepared as you can be to manage hot flashes if you’re starting to experience them.

Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, and Other Uncomfortable Hormonal Changes

Hot flashes and night sweats are very similar, although very slightly different. They’re both related to hormonal changes and many women tend to experience them as they go through perimenopause and menopause. Hot flashes and night sweats typically come on suddenly and are often extremely uncomfortable.

Symptoms of Hot Flashes

The symptoms of hot flashes are pretty straightforward. You’ll experience sudden warming in the upper body, usually around the neck, chest, and face. You might feel as if your face is flushed. Some women experience sweating during a hot flash, while others don’t. Night sweats are characterized by the same symptoms as hot flashes, along with copious amounts of sweat.

Triggers for Hot Flashes

What triggers hot flashes for you might vary from what other women experience and it can take some trial and error to learn what your triggers are. Being stressed or anxious can contribute to hot flashes, as can too much caffeine or alcohol. Spicy foods can be a trigger for some women. Being in an environment that’s too hot or wearing clothing that’s constricting can also contribute. You may want to consider keeping a log for a little while so that you can start to notice some of the more subtle triggers for you.

Small Things You Can Try to Help Hot Flashes

There might be some things you can try that help a little bit when a hot flash pops up. Using a fan to keep yourself cool can help, as can staying hydrated. Try sipping cold water often throughout the day. Dressing in layers so that you can get more comfortable if a hot flash hits is a good idea. If stress is a big trigger for you, consider finding ways to manage your stress, such as meditation or mindfulness.
