Whether tampons are safe or bad for you has been the subject of debates for decades. When used incorrectly, tampons can cause a deadly illness called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). This, alone, is enough to put off some women when it comes to tampons. If you use tampons correctly, they can be a safe way to control the bleeding during your menstrual cycle. Eagles Landing OB/GYN suggests you do the following to ensure wearing tampons is safe for you during your period.
Talk With Us First
Let’s talk about tampons together and how they will affect you. There may be extenuating circumstances that would cause us to recommend that you use pads instead of tampons. These situations are rare, but it’s always better to err on the side of caution when necessary.
Follow Directions
If tampons are a go, make sure to read the labels on the tampon packages you purchase from start to finish and follow all directions accordingly. Don’t do anything the manufacturer says to avoid. The warnings are there for a reason, and warnings can change between brands and tampon types.
Be Sanitary
Wash your hands before and after inserting the first tampon you’ll use during your cycle and each time you change them. Use antibacterial soap if you can every time you wash. Never use tampons unless you are on your period. They are not designed to be used as birth control or for any other reason.
Use Pads When You Sleep
Bacteria is what causes TSS, so it’s important to change your tampons every four to eight hours. Never wear a tampon for longer than eight hours, i.e. don’t wear them overnight. Changing the tampons regularly prevents bacterial buildup, as does using the anti-bacterial hand soap.
Keep it Slim
Buy a variety of tampon sizes to fit your menstrual flow. Use the lowest absorbency possible throughout your period. You should fill the tampon within four to six hours. This keeps you on the proper changing schedule and reduces TSS risk. Go as slim as you possibly can.
Pay Attention to You
Finally, if you feel pain, discomfort, or are experiencing unusual discharge, it’s better to switch to pads. Think about how the tampons make you feel, and if something seems wrong, it probably is. Tampons are great during the summer and when you play sports, but pads are also effective.
