A Taste of Chocolate
No need to wait for PMS to indulge your chocolate craving. On this special day, you can find some creative ways to explore the delectable taste of chocolate on absolutely everything your heart desires.
For breakfast, consider chocolate topped waffles, crepes or even bacon. Lunch can include an assortment of fruit like strawberries or apple slices dipped in chocolate — or your favorite salad with some chocolate drizzle. You might also enjoy chocolate covered potato chips, pretzels or almonds for a snack.
Of course, desserts drenched in chocolate are a must have for dinner – try a chocolate mousse cake, double fudge brownies or a New York style cheesecake with chocolate drizzle.
Why chocolate?
Chocolate has a long history dating back to approximately 1700 B.C. The Aztecs believed cacao seeds were a gift from the god of wisdom, Quetzalcoatl, and the seeds were considered a valuable form of currency.
Overseas expeditions in the 16th century led to the introduction of sugar in Europe, where settlers added sugar to it. In time, people in high society and eventually, commoners, began to enjoy it as a regular part of their diet.
Chocolate is made from seeds from the cacao tree that are roasted and ground then made into a liquid, paste or block form. The seeds have an intense, bitter taste, so they are fermented to develop the flavor. Most of the chocolate we eat today is a sweet chocolate that also contains milk powder or condensed milk.
Not only does chocolate taste great, it also can provide a variety of health benefits like protection from select diseases, improved heart health, better overall cholesterol and increased cognitive function. It is also considered an antioxidant-rich superfood.
More Chocolate Year-Round
There are other chocolate themed holidays you can celebrate throughout the year. There’s Chocolate Cake Day, Chocolate Cupcake Day, Chocolate Pecan Pie Day and Chocolate Milkshake Day to name a few.
The Eagles Landing OB/GYN team typically advises you to enjoy good things like chocolate in moderation, but we’re willing to make an exception for just one day! Cover everything in chocolate on December 16 and eat your heart out.
