Endometriosis is a painful condition from which many women in the United States suffer. Endometriosis occurs when your uterine lining “grows outside your uterus,” according to Mayo Clinic. In most cases, the uterine lining grows on your fallopian tubes, ovaries, and/or on top of your pelvic lining. Extreme Period Pain
Menstrual cramps are one thing but if you suffer from extremely painful periods that leave you bedridden or barely able to function, it’s time for an exam. You will feel the pain for several days during your menstruation and you may also suffer from abdominal and lower back pain during your period.
Painful Intercourse
Because the uterine lining is growing outside of the uterus, many women experience pain during sexual intercourse if they have endometriosis. This pain could be mild to severe and should be checked into right away. Painful intercourse is also a sign of other illnesses including STDs and infections.
Painful Elimination
Another sign of endometriosis is pain when you urinate and/or have bowel movements. The pelvic region has tissue growing where it shouldn’t be, and this can cause pain during normal bodily functions. As with painful intercourse, pain during urination or bowel movements also signal other problems.
Intermenstrual and/or Excessive Bleeding
Endometriosis can also cause you to bleed excessively during your period and in the middle of your cycle. Bleeding between periods is called intermenstrual bleeding, and this is a sign of endometriosis. Excessive bleeding can also indicate that you are hemorrhaging, so have it checked out right away.
Infertility
Sadly, endometriosis is one of the most common causes of infertility. In fact, many women don’t know they have endometriosis until they undergo infertility treatment. Thankfully, advancements in infertility treatment improve every day, which makes it easier for us to help you get pregnant.
Additional Signs
Finally, you may also feel extremely fatigued during your period, end up with excessive bloating, suffer from constipation or diarrhea, or even feel nauseous right before, after, and during your period. These symptoms will often accompany one or more of the symptoms above in women with endometriosis.
