If you think that you have to sit out a week of summer fun every month when you are on your period, Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN is here to tell you that periods and summer can go together. Menstruation doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the pool or the beach. You just need to have the proper supplies. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the summer even if you are on your period.

Be Bathroom Conscious

Always calendar when to expect your next menstruation so you can plan your beach and pool trips around it. If you are tolerant of wearing tampons, you can schedule beach and pool trips while on your period. No matter your summer activity, know where the nearest bathroom is at all times just in case you have a period emergency or leak.

Be Active and Enjoy the Summer

Your period should not be a summer death sentence. You can still enjoy all of your summer activities. In fact, exercising helps reduce cramps and bloating. Don’t over-exercise, but enjoy staying active even if you are menstruating. You’ll be surprised how much better this will make you feel.

Be Stocked With Supplies

Make sure you have all of the supplies you need in your beach bag or purse. Keep a variety of tampons sizes with you so you can use the right one depending on how heavy your flow is. If you don’t like to use tampons, make sure you have plenty of different pad sizes with you, again, to protect you from leaks depending on how heavy your flow is.

Be Aware of Things that Make You Bloat

Avoid things that make you bloat, including salty foods, carbonated beverages, and alcohol. Keep yourself hydrated with water. This not only helps prevent bloating but also ensures that you are receiving the maximum hydration you need in the summer heat. It might be tempting to down a couple of piña coladas, but this will make you retain water.

Be a Shaver Instead of a Waxer

Finally, when you are on your period, you will have a decreased pain tolerance that will make waxing much more painful than it normally is. It’s better to shave right before and when you are on your period. If you don’t want to cancel your bikini wax at the salon, make sure to take an OTC pain reliever before your appointment. This will make the waxing more tolerable.
