October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that makes it the perfect time to help out in your community. Breast cancer is a serious problem, and a major killer of women, but advances in medical technology have given those with the disease new treatment opportunities.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, now is the perfect time to look for ways to help. You can start by doing your own monthly breast exam, something you should be doing anyway. If you have any doubts about how to do the exam or what to do if you suspect something, talk to your doctor right away. Beyond that, however, there are some other ways to help out this October.
Seek Out Charity Events
From walks to fun runs, there are plenty of great ways to raise money and have fun during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you want to help your community and assist those struggling with breast cancer, signing up for one of these charity events is a great way to start.
Just sign up for the walk or fun run, bring the sponsorship sheets to your office and encourage your coworkers to participate. If you do not have time to participate yourself, you can always sponsor other people.
Volunteer at the Local Hospital or Clinic
Hospitals and medical clinics are always looking for volunteers, so check out volunteer opportunities in your community. Whether you assist patients or work through the backlog of paperwork, you will be doing your part to help those with breast cancer and other serious diseases.
If you have a well-behaved dog, ask about getting it certified as a therapy animal. Therapy dogs visit hospital patients, including those recovering from breast cancer, bringing a bit of normalcy into their lives and cheering them up enormously.
Talk to Cancer Survivors
Cancer is a common disease, and chances are you know someone who has struggled with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to talk to those survivors, giving them the help and care they need to go on with their recovery.
Whether you offer to babysit so they can enjoy a night out with their spouse, help with housecleaning or just sit and talk, you will be doing your part, something that is great to do during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or any other time of year.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a perfect time to look at how far we have come – and how far we still have to go. If you have some extra time, or some extra money, why not do your part to fight against this deadly disease?
