Urinary incontinence means that you have lost control of your bladder. Even though it is common and nearly every adult suffers from it at one point in their lives, it is still an incredibly embarrassing problem. Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN can help you with your urinary incontinence. We have treatment programs that not only get you your life back but also restore your confidence. Let’s talk about the different types of urinary incontinence below and their symptoms.
Stress Urinary Incontinence
Stress urinary incontinence is one of the most common types. This urinary incontinence releases urine when you place pressure on your bladder. Usually, the urine is released because you have coughed, laughed, or sneezed, during exercise, or when you lift something that is too heavy. Many adults suffer from stress urinary incontinence. Restoring the bladder and pelvic floor muscles helps to control it.
Urge Urinary Incontinence
A more inconvenient form of urinary incontinence is urge urinary incontinence. This incontinence is marked by a sudden and intense urge to urinate. Despite your best efforts, you cannot make it to the bathroom in time and you urinate in your undergarments. Urge urinary incontinence also causes the need to urinate frequently, including during the night when you are trying to sleep. Bladder infections, diabetes, and neurological disorders can cause urge urinary incontinence.
Overflow Urinary Incontinence
Overflow urinary incontinence means that you cannot empty your bladder anymore and, consequently, you have a problem with dribbling. No matter how hard you try, and no matter how convinced you are that you did get your bladder emptied, it will not be empty and you will experience dribbling into your undergarments.
Functional Urinary Incontinence
Functional urinary incontinence means that there is another medical condition that is preventing you from being able to go to the bathroom in time. For example, you may have severe arthritis that makes you unable to get to the bathroom quickly and get your overgarments and undergarments pulled down in time. There are several physical conditions that can cause functional urinary incontinence, including mental impairment and neurological disorders.
Mixed Urinary Incontinence
Finally, mixed urinary incontinence means that you experience more than one of the incontinence types listed above. The most common form of mixed urinary incontinence is stress and urge incontinence. This does not mean, however, that you cannot suffer from a combination of the other types on our list.
