Congratulations on your pregnancy. We hope that we here at Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN can make your experience less stressful and more enjoyable. This is one of the best times of your life, so don’t fret as the mercury drops. You can remain comfortable while pregnant, even if it’s cold outside. Just follow these tips and call us if you have any concerns.
General Tips
Although it’s tempting to stay inside where it’s warm, you still need plenty of fresh air. Sure, your cozy and comfy bed might seem as if it’s the best place to be, but it isn’t. Movement and fresh air are crucial to stave depression and keep you fit during your pregnancy, so get outside. Be careful, of course. Don’t rush or wear high heels when it’s raining or snowing, but try to keep yourself active during the winter months.
One thing you shouldn’t do is seek refuge from the cold in a Jacuzzi or sauna. These are a definite no-no for pregnant women. Going outside doesn’t mean you should hit the slopes, either. Winter sports, such as skiing or ice skating are dangerous to pregnant women due to their high fall risk. Leave the snow shoveling to someone else – you don’t want to twist or use your back too much – and don’t try to carry too many packages after your holiday shopping spree.
Get a flu shot during your second or third trimester to prevent illness. Your immune system is compromised when you’re carrying a little one. Keep your calendar as clear as possible to reduce stress, and always ask for help when you need it. If you’re tired, lay down for a nap. If you need to nap throughout the day, don’t beat yourself up. Your body needs the rest. Finally, distress with a nice warm cup of herbal tea or hot cocoa; just don’t over-caffeinate yourself.
Winter Fashion Tips
Of course, how you dress will also affect your comfort during cold weather. It doesn’t matter if you’re indoors or out, it’s always wise to layer your clothing during the winter months just in case you get too hot and want to strip down a little bit. Wear natural fabrics, such as fleece and cotton, because they breathe and keep you more comfortable. Ensure your outdoor warmth with gloves, a hat, scarves, and ski socks, and cover your chin, ears, and nose and your fingers, and toes. Waterproof yourself, too, with proper rain gear and boots.
