Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease or PID is a painful infection in a woman’s reproductive system. Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN can help with proper diagnosis and treatment if you suspect that you have PID. You don’t have to suffer. Let’s talk about pelvic inflammatory disease below and the symptoms of PID.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Basics

As we mentioned above, PID is an infection in your reproductive tract. You can get PID through sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. You can also get PID through other infections caused by excess douching or an IUD. Broken down further, the common causes of pelvic inflammatory disease include

  • Untreated STDs
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Sex with a partner who has multiple sexual partners
  • Previous pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Sexual activity before the age of 25
  • Excess douching
  • Using an IUD for birth control

Having safe, monogamous sex is the best way to avoid getting pelvic inflammatory disease. This means sex with one partner whom you know does not have an STD or multiple sex partners, or who is willing to wear a condom every time you have sex. It’s also important to pay attention for the signs of PID so you can have it treated as soon as possible.

What Are the Signs of PID?

Because there are no specific tests for pelvic inflammatory disease, we diagnose this condition based on the symptoms from which you are suffering, your medical history, a physical examination, and the results from other tests. Some women don’t know they have PID because their symptoms are not noticeable. This being said, schedule an appointment with us if you notice any of the following signs of PID:

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Consistent fever
  • Unusual and smelly vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding during sexual intercourse
  • Burning when you urinate
  • Bleeding between periods

All of these things can indicate pelvic inflammatory disease. If you don’t have PID, these symptoms are still an indication that there is something wrong going on in your reproductive tract. It’s important to have any of these symptoms examined as soon as possible to avoid additional pain and discomfort. It is also important to have these symptoms examined right away to avoid damaging your reproductive system.
