Gynecologist Exam

We here at Eagles Landing OB/GYN understand that visiting the gynecologist for the first time can be terrifying. Your body is changing in numerous ways and when you add the stress of going to see a gynecologist for the first time on top of everything else, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed. It’s important to see a gynecologist regularly to ensure that your feminine health is where it needs to be. Our goal is to make sure that you do not dread your gynecological exams. Here’s what to expect the first time you come to our medical offices and meet with one of our gynecologists.

External Examination

We realize it’s uncomfortable, but we will conduct an external examination of your breasts and your pelvic area to make sure that you don’t have any signs of cancer or other illness. This includes examining your vulva to make sure that you don’t have any infections or signs of sexually transmitted diseases.

Speculum Examination

Next, using the smallest speculum possible, we will open up your vagina to look for infection, cysts, irritation, or erosions. The speculum is inserted into your vagina to open it up so we have a better view. If you feel discomfort, let us know right away so we can choose a smaller speculum.

The gynecologist will also examine your cervix for signs of cancer and do a Pap smear. You will not feel the Pap smear. We use a brush or spatula to gather a few cells from your cervix so we can test them for cancer. We will also gather some cells along the vaginal wall to test for STDs.

Bimanual Exam

After the Pap smear, the gynecologist will put lubricant on his or her second and third fingers and insert them in your vagina. The gynecologist will take his or her other hand and press down on your lower abdomen to do what is called palpating the uterus and ovaries. What this does is allows us to feel for unusual growths in your uterus or on your ovaries. This is a cancer-detection exam.

That’s It!

Once the bimanual exam is completed, your gynecological exam is done. There are a few things to keep in mind before your first exam. Make sure to schedule the exam in between your periods and write down all of the questions you would like to ask your gynecologist so you don’t forget any.

We here at Eagles Landing OB/GYN in Stockbridge, GA, promise to make your first gynecological exam as easy as possible. We don’t want you to be afraid. We will work with you to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire process.
