Congratulations! You’ve just found out your pregnant. Now, what can you expect? Your body will change as your baby grows and develops inside the womb, and although all women experience pregnancy differently, there are some things that are common for every mom-to-be in the first trimester. What are they? Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN explains you can expect the following.
Breast Changes
Even though your baby is nowhere near ready to breastfeed, your breasts will swell soon after you conceive. You might think you’re just gearing up for your period, as the breast tenderness is the same. Unfortunately, you will have tender breasts beginning in the first trimester as they prepare for milk.
Morning Sickness
Some women don’t experience morning sickness and we hope you are lucky enough to be that woman. Still, nearly all women at least feel a little nauseous during their first trimester. Nausea will hit about one month into your first trimester, and although it’s called morning sickness it can happen anytime.
Frequent Urination
You might think this symptom is part of the last trimester because your baby is resting on your bladder, but you will need to urinate more often during your first trimester, too. Your body produces more blood when you’re pregnant which means your kidneys filter and send more fluid to your bladder.
Tiredness
Pregnancy boosts progesterone levels. Progesterone is a hormone that helps you sleep. The increased amount of progesterone will make you more tired, even during your first trimester. Take the time to rest more to stave the sleepiness and eat right and exercise per your OB/GYN’s recommendations.
Smell and Taste Changes
As you move through your first trimester, your sense of smell and taste change. You might find that the smell of certain foods increases your morning sickness. You may also find that you cannot stand the taste of your favorite foods anymore. Smell and taste sensitivities are caused by fluctuating hormones.
Heartburn and Constipation
Finally, hormone shifts during pregnancy relax the valve between your esophagus and stomach which makes it easier for you to get heartburn. Small, frequent meals that don’t fill your stomach can help prevent heartburn and nausea. High levels of progesterone during pregnancy also cause constipation.
