What to Expect During Your Third Trimester

Hang in there! You’re almost done. Oftentimes, the third trimester of your pregnancy is the most challenging because you just want to get your baby out of your belly. We here at Eagle’s Landing OB/GYN understand why. You’re uncomfortable, tired, and anxious for the birth of this wonderful addition to your family. Here’s what you can expect during your third trimester.

Your Baby Is Getting Big

At the 27-to-32-week mark, your infant is getting big. Your uterus has expanded upward to accommodate the size of your growing boy or girl. On average, your uterus’ top is 5 inches above your belly button. What does this mean? It means you may have increased heartburn and shortness of breath because your baby is pushing up on your diaphragm. Other side effects during this period include

  • One-pound weight gain weekly
  • Forty-to-50-percent blood volume increase
  • Feet and ankle swelling
  • Aches and pains
  • Anxiety over the labor and delivery

All of these symptoms are normal but your OB/GYN may still want to see you every two weeks or once a month just to make sure everything remains a-okay. Don’t be panicked by the increased doctor visits. This, too, is normal, especially if you are having a rough pregnancy.

Two Weeks Before Delivery

From 38-to-40 weeks, your baby is getting ready to be welcomed into the world. He or she will turn his or her head down unless he or she is going to be born breech. In some cases, your OB/GYN will order a sonogram to confirm the baby’s position prior to birth. You may also have a stress test to ensure your baby’s heartbeat is strong and ready to handle the stress of labor.

Finally, other common symptoms felt throughout the third trimester include

  • Increased Braxton-Hicks contractions
  • Urinating constantly
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Breast tenderness and leaking

We know this sounds horrible but you are much stronger than any of these uncomfortable symptoms. Keep your eye on the ultrasound photos of your beautiful baby and look forward to the wonder this little one will add to your life.
